As a woman in midlife, and in menopause, I am constantly searching for products to keep me at my healthiest and most energized.

I strive to live an active live in which happiness, exercise, and a vegetarian diet take center stage.

And, this strategy has worked well for me over the last several years.

Some of the beneficial lifestyle changes I made when I hit my forties include:

  • Practicing gratitude everyday
  • Limiting alcohol (one glass of wine a month-ish)
  • Exercising everyday with few exceptions
  • Choosing workouts that make me feel like a kid again (bike riding, hiking, yoga)

By committing to these shifts in my routine, I’ve been able to minimize some of the difficult aspects of entering menopause, like weight gain, irritability, and mood swings.

Menopause Mayhem

However, I have had some difficult days in which hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue, headaches, digestive issues, among other unpleasant symptoms, have left me feeling discouraged and frustrated.

I’ve often wondered how long these symptoms will persist. And, I’m concerned they will have lasting effects on my health, weight, and overall outlook on life.

So, when I began to learn about the benefits of Clary Sage oil, I was intrigued, hopeful, and inspired to learn more!

What is Clary Sage Oil?

Clary Sage is a flowering herb naturally found in the Mediterranean Basin, as it grows well in high-temperature areas.

Clary Sage oil is a highly concentrated oil. It is extracted from the leaves and flowers of the Clary Sage plant. And, it’s traditionally used as a flavoring in tea.

It’s also sometimes referred to as “clear eye” or “eye bright” due to its benefits for eye health.

However, Clary Sage oil is now being studied for other possible, and exciting, health benefits. Even more encouraging, the health benefits for women in midlife are promising!

Of course I was thrilled to find a new supplement to add to my wellness routine! So, I took a deep dive into the science behind the benefits of Clary Sage oil.

Clary Sage Oil and Its Benefits for Women in Midlife

Benefits for Women in Midlife

1. Reduces Anxiety and Depression

As a woman in midlife, and part of Generation X, you are likely busy with a full-time career, older children, grandchildren, and/or aging parents.

And, the stress of a demanding job and busy home life can have damaging effects on your long-term health.

Clary Sage is a therapeutic agent for depression and anxiety as it may induce feelings of calmness, clarity, and relaxation. It may also alleviate irritability, anxiety, and dizziness.

As an effective stress reducer, it has been shown to improve memory. It may also boost your mood and reduce feelings of failure.

The Science

A 2010 study cited by Science Direct, on a group of 22 post-menopausal women, shows the positive effects that this herb has in treating depression and anxiety.

Researchers found that clary sage oil had a noticeable antidepressant-like effect, stating that “clary sage oil had a statistically significant effect on lowering cortisol and had an anti-depressant effect improving mood.”

2. Supports Hormonal Balance

Clary Sage oil (Salvia sclarea) has been used since ancient times for its various health properties to relieve the distressing symptoms of menopause.

According to an article by Heathline, “One component of clary sage oil is sclareol, which mimics the effects of estrogen in the body. For this reason, clary sage may be effective at reducing some of the symptoms of menopause.”

So, if you’re experiencing high levels of stress, mood swings, digestive and skin issues, or your menstrual discomfort, Clary Sage oil may be the answer!

Phytoestrogens

Clary Sage oil also contains natural phytoestrogens, or “dietary estrogens”, which are derived from plants, not produced in the endocrine system.

And, these beneficial phytoestrogens regulate estrogen levels while ensuring the long-term health of the uterus, decreasing the risk of uterine and ovarian cancer.

Your body requires cholesterol to build cells, protect nerves, and make vitamins and hormones. And, these phytosterols help you manage blood cholesterol levels to allow your body to work as it should.

These are some key reasons why Clary Sage oil is one of the most recommended supplements for women in menopause!

3. Firms and Hydrates Skin

Linalyl acetate is an important compound in Clary Sage. It’s a natural phytochemical found in spice plants and flowers and is known to reduce skin inflammation and regulate oil production.

Linalool and linalyl acetate found in Clary Sage oil acts as a potent anti-inflammatory agent and can be used to calm irritation and reduce redness.

As a result, it decreases tell-tale signs of aging skin by keeping your skin firm, hydrated, and clear.

4. Improves Sleep

Some people may also use Clary Sage oil for its sleep-promoting properties. That’s because Clary Sage is a natural sedative that provides a soothing effect, helping you to fall asleep and stay asleep!

It’s been shown to decrease the levels of hormones that have been linked to stress, such as cortisol.

And, cortisol influences circadian rhythms and may to be tied to alertness. Therefore, by reducing levels cortisol you can enjoy a night of deep sleep!

Clary Sage Seeds and Omega-3

Clary Sage oil can be cold-pressed and extracted as a source for Omega-3 without the use of chemicals or additives.

According an article from to Hippocrates Wellness, “Upon examination of the Clary Sage seeds, the team was surprised to find a concentration of over 50% of Omega-3 in the oil produced from the seeds. This is one of the highest and rarest concentrations of Omega-3 ever found in nature.”
