For any number of reasons, you can find yourself dissatisfied with your current reality. And, if you’re over 40, you may be in the midst of a midlife crisis, or what I like to call a midlife awakening.

Regardless of your personal situation, you can change your life forever by putting these 7 habits for success into practice!

1. Surrender

The first step is to surrender to whatever is happening in your life. This doesn’t mean that you have accept your current circumstances, but you do have to acknowledge them. So, be completely honest with yourself.

You may come to realize that you have evolved into a new version of yourself and desire something different from life. Or, perhaps you’ve made some poor decisions that put you in this situation.

Whatever the case, you can’t resolve a problem if you don’t face it head on. Now that you are being real with yourself, you can identify which issues need your immediate attention. Be prepared; you may have to do some damage control.

2. Rewire Your Brain

The most effective way to change your life is to create it! You can transform your life in no time when you practice mindfulness. That’s because your thoughts, actions, and emotions are the foundational elements of your life, and you have complete control over them! You literally have the power to you to speak, think, and act your way into a new reality.

Admittedly, this takes some practice. You’ll have to reprogram your subconscious mind and essentially create a new personality. But, this is actually a lot easier than it sounds.

Overcoming the Ego

Your ego is the main source of the negative thoughts that keep you reliving your past. But there are simple, effective ways to get beyond your egoic personality.

The first step is to overcome the limiting beliefs that keep you stuck in repetitive patterns. These habits of mind prevent you from reaching your full potential because they are a record of your past self.

Then, take purposeful action steps to replace unhelpful thoughts with constructive ones. Remember, you are in control of your mind and not the other way around!

However, if you have mental health issues or unresolved trauma, please seek professional help. You can’t truly move forward without healing past emotional wounds.

3. Be Happy Now

You don’t need to have everything you want to be joyful. But, how often is your happiness conditional? Is it dependent upon material gain or wealth? The euphoria you feel from outer circumstances, like buying a new home or a car, will inevitably fade. True contentment only comes from within.

Think back to your childhood when everything brought you joy, and sadness was the exception. Reignite those feelings of gratitude for each new day. Live as if everything is possible!

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”

Socrates

The Universe is always working for you behind the scenes, and consistently answers your requests with a resounding, “Yes!” So, be extremely clear about what you want and put all of your focus on that! Now, you’re sending a clear message out to the Universe.

Then, stay present and think positive, abundant thoughts. As a result, you will vibrate at a higher frequency and attract what you want into your life.

And, you don’t have to figure out how something will happen, the Universe will work out the details behind the scenes. Simply have faith that everything will manifest at the perfect time.

But, when your intuition nudges you to take action, go for it! Remain confident that you already have everything you want, it just hasn’t materialized in your outer world yet.

4. Follow Your Own Path

As you begin live more consciously, you’ll suddenly start having realizations about your life. Some people refer to these as ah-ha moments.

With this newfound clarity, you’ll be able to identify exactly what you want, and don’t want, in your life. For instance, you may want to set healthier boundaries in relationships, start an exercise routine, or focus more on self care.

The people around you will sense that you’re different. And, they may not like it. When you change, it shifts the dynamics of the relationship. And, because they’re used to you being a certain way, this new you might make them uncomfortable.

You may notice that they will continue to bring up your past to remind you of who you are in their eyes. And, this can be painful if you are earnestly working to upgrade your life.

But, don’t let anyone derail you. Eventually, they’ll either respect your decisions and cheer you on, or they’ll drift out of your life.

5. Do Something That Scares You

Making the decision to step out of your comfort zone can be daunting, but I highly recommend it! And, it’s essential for personal growth. How can you expect to evolve if you continue to repeat old habits and routines?

Reaching new heights involves risk because you’re opening yourself up to the possibility of failure. However, studies prove that some anxiety can help you perform at your best. So, when you challenge yourself to go beyond the status quo, you will rise to the occasion.

And, this doesn’t mean that you have to do something momentous. It can simply mean that you take a step, however small, in a new, positive direction.

These small victories will give you the confidence you need to keep moving forward. And, even if you don’t achieve your goal, use these experiences as a learning tool. Failure is simply another word for expansion and it builds resiliency.

6. Keep an Open Mind

When things don’t go as planned, learn how to work with life instead of fighting against it. You are conditioned to be happy when things go your way. But, when life gets messy or uncomfortable, you may get angry, frustrated or depressed. Not everything is going to work out the way you envisioned, and that’s okay.

Oftentimes, your most difficult challenges turn into your greatest blessings, although it doesn’t feel good in that moment. But, be patient and allow your path to unfold.

7. Learn Who You Truly Are

So, here’s an awkward question: Do you really know who you are? In other words, do you know what motivates, scares, and truly inspires you?

Understanding what makes you, you is a big part of being self-aware. But, how can you change your life if you don’t know what you want to change in the first place?

So, carve out some time for yourself. When you become your own best friend, you’ll gain insight into what drives you, and you’ll strengthen your inner guidance system.

Metamorphosis

A wonderful metaphor for change is the unassuming caterpillar that enters its chrysalis unaware that it will soon transform into a majestic butterfly. The caterpillar essentially has to disintegrate to allow new structures to grow so it can reemerge as a butterfly.

This is an extreme example of letting go and allowing. And, it perfectly illustrates the process of change.

So, what does transformation look like in your life? Are there specific areas that you’d like to change? What is most difficult thing about this process for you? Feel free to comment below and let’s get the conversation started!
